A little something about me: I have an obsession with all things art – whether it’s photography, painting, literature, music, sculpture or food – and so it was only fitting that we stayed in one of Melbourne’s iconic ‘Art Series Hotels’, The Cullen. A 1-minute walk from the Prahran Market tram stop, this funky boutique hotel featuring decor inspired by artist Adam Cullen is truly unique.

At check in, for the first time in my life I was offered the mother of all upgrades – the penthouse! There was a small fee however (quite small considering the upgrade), and for only two nights we felt it would be better to enjoy that kind of luxury over a longer stay as we would hardly be in our room (perhaps we’ll get just as lucky next time). So instead, we took an upgrade to one of their deluxe balcony suites. One of the greatest things about the rooms at The Cullen (aside from the engaging art) are the Arts Series Signature beds – hands down, no questions asked! These beds would easily be the most heavenly things you could ever rest your head on. They’re so life changing in fact, that guests are actually able to order their own dream ensemble to have in their own home. Another thing to love about this hotel and the beds – you are actually encouraged to jump on them!
After checking in and sufficiently messing up the bedding we unpacked and decided to explore the hotel grounds. On ground level, you can find two exciting restaurants to satisfy your palette, meaning you don’t have to go far for a great meal. The Gramercy Bistro brings a little slice of New York, offering big apple favourites with a Melbourne twist! If the Asian cuisine gets your tastebuds tingling, head straight to Hutong Peking Duck & Dumpling. A favourite restaurant of Prahran, this charming, contemporary space serves up favourites such as Xutong Xiao-long-bao and Hutong Peking Roast Duck. Once you’ve explored what this hotel has to offer, and you’re ready to hit Melbourne’s streets, The Cullen have a small fleet of funky smart cars to hire for just $50 a day.
One of my favourite moments from our stay was sitting out on our balcony drinking cider, eating cake and looking out over Prahran as the sun went down.
