Ever wondered what it might be like to spend some time inside a giant ice cube? Do you like your drinks served extra chilled? After a particularly unique way to enjoy your cocktails? If any of these struck your fancy, Minus 5º Bar in Queenstown is your spot.
Ashlea and I added this place to our stay in Queenstown, hearing good things but not really knowing what to expect! I highly recommend booking ahead online as spots fill up fast. (Bookme.co.nz offers some really great deals if you’re looking to keep the cost down!)
Meeting at the front desk, the helpful attendants got us sorted with our very own Eskimo kit to keep us warm in the extreme temperatures once inside. Then, when everyone was rugged up, our small group was taken across to the bar. Over 18 tonnes of crystal clear ice make up this unique space, which is furnished with ice chairs, tables and impressive hand made ice carvings – even the drinks are served from ice glasses (trust me when I say this is a two handed operation)! The lighting, music and enthusiastic bar staff make for a great way to start off a night on the town, and seems to be pretty popular for birthdays, bucks nights and hens.
With temperatures ranging from -5º to -10º, each group gets an allocated amount of time inside, just enough to enjoy the experience without freezing to the bone!
After a couple of icy cocktails, sitting on an icy throne and making a few new friends, it was time to head back out into the fresh air. We went on to defrost in The Boiler Room, just next door, for a few more cocktails and live music.
This place really is a load of fun, and is great for a night out with friends or a unique experience with the family.
