Hio Beach

After spending the morning getting involved at the primary schools Cultural Sports Day, we jumped in the car and set off to Hio Beach (pronounced He-yo) to spend a few hours doing nothing but playing about in the reef and laying on the sand. Towering rocky walls rise up high around you, making the place feel private and protected. As you descend the steep staircase entrance, there’s a small platform with a board and paddle beside an honesty tin: when the tide is right, take the board out on the water and leave a donation in the tin. That afternoon, we had the entire little cove all to ourselves, dancing on the shoreline and splashing about in the shallows.
